GTA 6 police and the wanted level
Updated · 3 min read
GTA 6's police are tougher and smarter than GTA V's. The August 2026 Extended Look showed a six-star wanted level (up from five), cops and shopkeepers who recognise you by your clothes on security cameras, and a system where you stash outfits and weapons in your car to change your look while police search. Law enforcement is split between Vice City's police and county sheriffs, and the community has already mapped several stations. Here's what's known and where the stations are on our map.
Updated Oct 15, 2026: first version.
How does the wanted level work in GTA 6?
From the Extended Look:
- Six stars is the new maximum. GTA V stopped at five.
- Recognition by clothing. Security cameras and shop owners can identify Jason and Lucia by what they're wearing. Change clothes and you're harder to spot.
- Car storage. You can keep clothes and weapons in your car, so a quick change during a search is possible.
- Appearance. Characters visibly show the effects of days on the run.
- Police cars can be flipped by shooting out their tyres.
- Criminal profiling: doing crimes efficiently makes you a "good criminal".
Rockstar hasn't explained what each star level brings or how long searches last. We'll add it on launch day.
Who are the police in GTA 6?
There are at least two kinds of law enforcement:
- Vice City police. The 2022 leak showed a V.C.P.D. car, and the community has mapped the Vice Beach Police Department, matched to the Miami Beach Police Department.
- County sheriffs. Sheriff badges and patrol cars in the trailers name Leonida's counties, from Vice-Dale (Miami-Dade) to Leonard, Kelly and Mariana. That's how fans pieced together the county map.
The Coast Guard matters too: Cal Hampton, Jason's friend, stays home monitoring Coast Guard communications, per Rockstar's bio. A Coast Guard base is pinned off Vice City.
Where are the police stations in GTA 6?
Mapped so far by the community (names are the mappers' labels until the game confirms them):
Rockstar hasn't confirmed which are enterable or where you respawn after an arrest. In GTA V you woke up outside the nearest police station.
Can you go to jail in GTA 6?
Lucia's story starts with her leaving Leonida Penitentiary, so prison is part of the game's world. Whether getting busted can send you there, as opposed to a respawn, hasn't been shown. A prison is pinned near Port Gellhorn, though Rockstar hasn't confirmed it's the penitentiary. See Lucia Caminos.
Can you be a cop in GTA 6?
Not as far as Rockstar has shown. Both playable characters are criminals: Jason worked for drug runners and Lucia is fresh out of prison. There's no police career or vigilante mode announced.
What crimes bring the police?
The ones Rockstar has shown: store robberies (shopkeepers can shoot back), bank jobs, car theft with a mini-game, and selling stolen cars through the WAiNK app. See GTA 6 activities for everything else you can do, legal or not.
