Where Does GTA 6 Take Place?
Updated · 3 min read
Short answer: GTA 6 takes place in Leonida, Rockstar's fictional version of Florida, in the present day. Its biggest city is Vice City, GTA's take on Miami, last seen in 2002's GTA Vice City. Rockstar has named six regions to explore: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. The game comes out on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Is GTA 6 set in Florida?
In all but name. Rockstar calls Leonida "the sunshine state", and every region copies a part of Florida: Miami's art deco beaches, the Keys, the Everglades, the Gulf coast, the sugar country around Lake Okeechobee and the forests of the north. Rockstar told Game Informer it researched Panama City, Jacksonville, Ocala and small rural towns. It also said not to expect "those exact locations" such as Disney World or the Space Coast. The game picks landscapes, it doesn't copy the state mile by mile.
Is GTA 6 in Vice City?
Yes, and much more. Vice City is the heart of the map and holds about half of the 889 places we've mapped so far: the Ocean View Hotel on Vice Beach, the Sahara Arena downtown, Little Cuba, the airport and the port. Rockstar calls it "the sun and fun capital of America". But unlike the 2002 game, the city is only one part of a whole state. Compare the two in GTA 6 vs the original Vice City.

What towns and cities are in GTA 6?
Besides Vice City, the community map (built from official trailers and screenshots) shows smaller towns, including:
Fans have also read county names such as Vice-Dale and Leonard on in-game signs, but Rockstar hasn't published a county map; our county pages say which places carry each name.
Can you leave Leonida in GTA 6?
Nothing announced says you can. Number plates mention Gloriana, a neighbouring state that fans read as Georgia, and Lucia's family once lived in Liberty City, but neither has been shown as a place you can visit. Cuba isn't in the game either; Vice City has a Little Cuba neighbourhood instead (Is Cuba in GTA 6?). We'll update this page on launch day if that changes.
When is GTA 6 set?
Today. The 2002 Vice City was set in 1986; GTA 6's Vice City has social media, smartphones and modern cars, and the trailers parody present-day Florida news clips. Rockstar's own pitch: "We're a long way from the '80s, but Vice City is still the sun and fun capital of America."
How big is Leonida?
About twice the size of GTA 5's map, according to Rockstar's Aaron Garbut, and reportedly three times Red Dead Redemption 2's. The numbers and how they're measured are in How big is the GTA 6 map?
