How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?
Updated · 4 min read
Short answer: Rockstar says the GTA 6 map is "around twice the size" of GTA V's, the biggest map it has ever made. It hasn't given a figure in km². GTA V's map is commonly measured at about 76 km² including water, so "twice" points to roughly 150 km² in total. Counting land only, the most detailed fan map (State of Leonida v16) estimates about 86 km² of Leonida above water, against just under 50 km² for GTA V.
Updated Oct 14, 2026: first version, with Rockstar's Game Informer and preview statements.
Older games: fan measurements of total area. GTA 6: Rockstar's 'around twice' GTA V.
What has Rockstar said about the size?
Two statements from Rockstar's August and September 2026 previews:
- Aaron Garbut of Rockstar North told Game Informer the map is the biggest Rockstar has made "by some degree", "around twice the size" of GTA V, and "denser, more detailed, and more interactive".
- Rob Nelson of Rockstar North reportedly told YouTuber TGG at a hands-on preview that the world is about 2× GTA V and 3× Red Dead Redemption 2, and that Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. That's second-hand, reported by VGC and Vice.
Rockstar's narrative lead Rupert Humphries added that the story won't take you everywhere: "We don't have time to take you everywhere, but we want you to be able to explore."
How big is the GTA 6 map in km² and square miles?
There's no official number yet, so here's what the estimates say and where each comes from:
| Estimate |
Area |
What it measures |
Source |
| "Around twice GTA V" |
≈ 150 km² (≈ 58 sq mi) |
Total, incl. water |
Rockstar (Game Informer), our arithmetic on GTA V's 75.8 km² |
| State of Leonida v16 |
≈ 85.6 km² (≈ 33 sq mi) |
Land only |
Fan map, Sept 2026 |
| Insider Gaming |
≈ 150–160 km², ≈ 100 km² land |
Total / land |
Extrapolated from "twice GTA V" |
The fan estimate has moved: State of Leonida's v15 map put Leonida's land at about 110 km², and v16 cut that to about 85.6 km² after re-scaling against newer official material. That's normal for a pre-release map. We'll replace all of this with real measurements once the game is out on November 19.
Is GTA 6 bigger than GTA 5?
Yes, about twice as big, by Rockstar's own description. GTA V's map is about 75.8 km² including water (a fan measurement; Rockstar never published one) and about 49–50 km² of land. Leonida's land alone is estimated at 85.6 km², so even the cautious fan figure puts GTA 6 well ahead on land. Full comparison in GTA 6 vs GTA 5 map.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than RDR2?
Yes. Rob Nelson's reported figure is three times Red Dead Redemption 2's world, and the New York Times also reported "three times" RDR2's playable area. RDR2's map is usually quoted at about 75 km², but that figure is a low-confidence fan number.
How is the map measured before release?
Fans can't walk the map yet, so they build it from official footage:
- Match buildings to real ones. Most of Vice City copies Miami closely. The Ocean View Hotel is the Clevelander on Ocean Drive, the Sahara Arena is the Kaseya Center. A matched building gives a real-world reference point.
- Triangulate. A landmark seen from several angles in the trailers can be placed on a grid with basic trigonometry.
- Scale. Known sizes (road widths, a runway, a stadium) fix the scale of the grid in metres.
GTADB and State of Leonida have done this for years. Their map is our basemap: the scale bar on our map comes from it.
How big is Vice City in GTA 6?
Vice City is the biggest city Rockstar has built. Rob Nelson reportedly put it at about twice the size of Los Santos, and 11 times Los Santos when you count its suburbs. On our map it holds about half of all known places, from Vice Beach's hotels to the airport.
What's in the rest of the map?
Leonida has six official regions. Beyond the city:

How does GTA 6 compare with older GTA maps?
| Game |
Year |
Area (total, incl. water) |
| GTA Vice City |
2002 |
≈ 9.1 km² |
| GTA IV |
2008 |
≈ 16.1 km² |
| GTA San Andreas |
2004 |
≈ 38.2 km² |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 |
2018 |
≈ 75 km² |
| GTA V |
2013 |
≈ 75.8 km² |
| GTA 6 |
2026 |
≈ 2× GTA V (Rockstar) |
All older figures are fan measurements, since Rockstar doesn't publish map areas. Even so, the original Vice City would fit into today's Vice City several times over.
