Leonida: the state of GTA 6
Updated · 3 min read
Leonida is the fictional US state where GTA 6 takes place: Rockstar's version of Florida. Rockstar calls it "the sunshine state" and says it's home to "the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond". It has six official regions, from Vice City in the south-east to Mount Kalaga on the northern border, plus lakes, swamps and a chain of islands. This page explains the state itself; the map shows every place we've pinned in it, 889 so far.

Is Leonida a real place?
No. Leonida is invented, the same way GTA V's San Andreas is a fictional California. Everything about it points to Florida: the shape, the swamps, the Keys, the sugar country around a big lake, and Vice City, which is Miami. Game Informer calls Florida the game's real-world inspiration. Rockstar hasn't explained the name, but it reads like a riff on "Florida". For the side-by-side, see GTA 6 map vs Florida.
What are the regions of Leonida?
Rockstar lists six places to explore, each with its own page on our map:
| Region |
What it is |
Real-life inspiration (press) |
| Vice City |
The big city: beaches, nightlife, the port |
Miami |
| Leonida Keys |
Island chain, boats and dive bars |
Florida Keys |
| Grassrivers |
Wetlands, gators, mangroves |
Everglades |
| Port Gellhorn |
"Leonida's forgotten coast" |
Panama City area |
| Ambrosia |
Sugar refinery and biker country |
Lake Okeechobee towns |
| Mount Kalaga |
National park, hunting and trails |
North Florida (unclear) |
The towns inside them and the real places behind them are in where does GTA 6 take place and GTA 6 locations.
Does Leonida have counties?
Probably, but there's no official list. Rockstar talks about regions, not counties. County names come from signs, police cars and sheriff badges in the trailers: Vice-Dale (Miami-Dade), Leonard, Kelly, Mariana and Ambrosia County. The map image that leaked in August 2026 shows five counties, adding Lummox County in the north, which hasn't appeared anywhere official.
We give each leaked county a page with that caveat: Vice-Dale County, Leonard County, Kelly County, Mariana County and Lummox County. Borders are our best reading of the leak, not Rockstar's.
What borders Leonida?
- The Atlantic to the east: the Atlantic Ocean off Vice City's beaches.
- The Gulf of Leonida to the west, Rockstar's Gulf of Mexico: see Gulf of Leonida.
- The Leonida Straits to the south of the Keys: see Leonida Straits.
- Gloriana to the north. Licence plates and Game Informer's coverage name a neighbouring state called Gloriana, a Georgia stand-in, along Mount Kalaga's border. Nobody knows if you can drive into it.
Inland, Lake Leonida plays Lake Okeechobee. The Ultimate Edition puts the One-Eyed Willie's mod shop on its shore.
How big is Leonida?
Rockstar says the map is "around twice the size" of GTA V's. Fan measurements put Leonida's land at roughly 85 km² inside a bounding box of about 21 × 20 km, and Vice City alone was reportedly described at previews as about twice the size of Los Santos. Estimates still disagree; our map size guide compares them.
What's in Leonida besides Vice City?
Plenty that Rockstar has named:
- Leonida Penitentiary, where Lucia served her time. Mappers have pinned a prison near Port Gellhorn; whether it's the penitentiary isn't confirmed.
- The Allied Crystal sugar refinery in Ambrosia, matched to a sugar mill.
- Brian Heder's boat yard in the Keys, likely Brian's Marina.
- The Starlet Motel and the Delights "Cabaret" in Port Gellhorn: Starlet Motel sign, Delights.
- Mascots on Rockstar's merchandise: Macca the Gator and Chunkee the Manatee.
Can you leave Leonida?
Not as far as anyone knows. Every announced region is inside the state. Liberty City appears only in Lucia's backstory (is Liberty City in GTA 6?) and Cuba only as Vice City's Little Cuba neighbourhood (is Cuba in GTA 6?).
