Is Liberty City in GTA 6?
Updated · 3 min read
Short answer: not as a place you can visit, as far as anyone knows. GTA 6 is set in Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida, and all six regions Rockstar has announced are there. Liberty City, the series' New York, appears only in Lucia's backstory: her official bio says she wants "the good life her mom has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City". Fans have spotted a few Liberty City references in the trailers, but Rockstar hasn't shown it as a location. We'll update this page on launch day, November 19, 2026, if that changes.
Updated Oct 15, 2026: first version.
Can you go to Liberty City in GTA 6?
Nothing official says you can. Rockstar's list of places to explore is Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Every one of them is in Leonida. Neither trailer, the 70+ official screenshots nor the August 2026 Netflix Extended Look has shown a New York-style city.
The leaks point the same way. The 2022 footage was all Vice City and rural Leonida, and the unverified map image posted in August 2026 shows only Leonida and its islands. Our map leak guide covers both.
What is GTA 6's connection to Liberty City?
Lucia. She's one of the two playable characters, and Rockstar's bio says her family once lived in Liberty City before she ended up in Leonida, where she served time in Leonida Penitentiary. That's the one Liberty City line in Rockstar's GTA 6 material that we could find.
Trailer details. After Trailer 2 in May 2025, fans spotted a Liberty City licence plate on a truck and a Liberty City hat on a character. A plate or a hat is background detail, though, not proof of a playable city.
Liberty City itself is one of the series' oldest settings: GTA III (2001), Liberty City Stories (2005), GTA IV (2008) and Chinatown Wars (2009) all took place there.
Could Liberty City be a small separate area?
That's the most common fan theory, and it's speculation. GTA V opened in North Yankton, a small snowy area away from the main map, and Red Dead Redemption 2 had the island of Guarma. Some fans expect a Liberty City flashback or prologue for Lucia in the same way. Sceptics point out that nothing like it showed up in the 2022 leak, which included plenty of early development footage.
There's no evidence either way from Rockstar, so we don't put Liberty City on our map.
Will Liberty City be added later?
Unknown. Two older reports are worth knowing:
- Bloomberg reported that Rockstar planned to expand the game with new cities after launch. That hasn't been confirmed.
- Axios reported that early plans had "four protagonists and three cities", which were cut back to the game we know: two protagonists and one state.
Neither names Liberty City. Treat any "Liberty City DLC" claim as rumour until Rockstar announces it.
Where does GTA 6 take place instead?
In Leonida, with Vice City (Miami) at its centre. See where GTA 6 takes place for the six regions and the real places behind them, and GTA 6 locations for every named place so far. Cuba is a similar question with a similar answer: see is Cuba in GTA 6?
