How long is GTA 6's story mode?
Updated · 3 min read
About 80 hours, going by the only figure from Rockstar. Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, told The New York Times in August 2026 that his own playthrough of GTA 6 took about 80 hours. That run covered the main story plus some "optional goals with narrative ramifications", so it isn't a pure main-story time. Rockstar hasn't published an official story length, a 100% completion time or a mission count. Even so, 80 hours would make GTA 6 the longest GTA campaign yet, well beyond GTA 5. The game launches on November 19, 2026.

How long is the GTA 6 story?
The one number with a Rockstar name behind it is Nelson's 80 hours. Keep three caveats in mind:
- It's one developer's run. A studio head knows where everything is. Someone playing for the first time will probably take longer.
- It includes some side content. Nelson didn't say how much. The main missions on their own could be shorter.
- It's a single interview figure. Rockstar hasn't repeated it on its own site or store pages.
Older numbers are out of date. A "35–40 hours" claim did the rounds early in 2026, and so did a "45–50 hours" estimate. Neither came from Rockstar, and Nelson's figure replaces both.
How does that compare with GTA 5 and RDR2?

So even if the main missions come in well under 80 hours, GTA 6 looks set to be at least as long as RDR2 and far longer than GTA V. GTA BOOM points out that this isn't a like-for-like comparison: Nelson's run included optional goals, while the RDR2 number is a main-story average.
How many missions are in GTA 6?
Not announced. Rockstar hasn't given a mission count, and no store page or interview lists one. Fan "mission lists" online are guesses or come from the 2022 test-build leak, which is years older than the final game. We'll add the real number after launch.
What Rockstar has shown is the kind of jobs you'll do: store robberies, a bank job with getaway driver Raul Bautista, and heists across the state. See the GTA 6 characters guide for who gives you work.
Will the story show you the whole map?
No, and Rockstar says so. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's SVP of narrative: "We don't have time to take you everywhere, but we want you to be able to explore." The map is "around twice the size" of GTA V's (see how big the GTA 6 map is), so plenty of Leonida sits off the main story's path.
The trailers already point to where the story goes:
Nelson's advice, as GTA BOOM puts it: don't rush to the end credits, and "actually live in the world" between jobs. The GTA 6 activities guide lists the side content Rockstar has shown so far: racing, fishing, hunting, scuba diving, the gym and more.
How long will 100% completion take?
Unknown. Rockstar hasn't said, and no reviewer has finished the game yet. If the story plus some side goals took Nelson 80 hours, finding every collectible and finishing every activity will take a good deal longer. We'll track collectibles on the map from launch day.
When can I start playing?
GTA 6 comes out on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Digital pre-load opens on November 12. There's no PC date yet: see GTA 6 on PC. Pre-load details and what's known about the download are in the GTA 6 file size guide.
